My love note to Cross County

Well, you never know how much you need something until you can’t have it. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell Cross County Parkway just how much I appreciate it. Yesterday’s Papal visit to Yonkers forced massive closures of the parkway and boy did it cause a mess. In the future every day I drive drama-free on Cross County I will be thankful.

In less positive news, no thanks to whoever was in charge in Yonkers. Somebody did a miserable, and by miserable I mean nonexistent, job of publicizing the closures. If you searched hard you could find some hours and details about the Cross County closures. However, there was no information anywhere about local street closures or alternate routes, ahem, McLean Avenue. Of course the Manhattan (and even Bronx) closures were well advertised.

I’d also like to give a big no thanks to 90% of the YPD out there directing traffic. It was disorganized and half the delays were caused by either motorists being lost and asking directions at closure/redirection spots or the police directing traffic essentially in a circle. I don’t think the entire city’s fire engines being out was helping much either. What, were they expecting to do some firefighting out there? Lastly, I award my highest disrespect to those officers who turned on their lights and sirens in their civilian or undercover cars and drove on the wrong side of the road to get around the mess and get themselves home from Popefest while what we really needed was them to stop and help direct the rest of us out of it.

Do you like how I make this entry not about my religious views or objections to the Pope himself? Oh, it would have been 87 times longer. I will say, though, that guy messed up my Saturday by proxy!

To sum it all up, Pope visit, you are annoying. Cross County Parkway, you give me hope as you let me cut across Westchester every day!
